Douglas Rushkoff is a writer, media theorist, lecturer, columnist, documentarian, and graphic novelist. His main focus is technology, media, and digital culture. He has wrote many books about these topics, as well as sub topics that are relevant to them.

Douglas Rushkoff brings up great points and arguments in his Article, We’ve spent the decade letting our tech define us. It’s out of control, about technology’s rule over humans. Rushkoff’s goal is to inform and educate reads on how technology has become an environment we are constantly attached to. We can use it 24/7 and practically anywhere we go. We are constantly watched by developers and algorithms to predict our next move, so they can control it.

Grand Valley’s digital studies minor educates it’s students on how to safely and effectively use digital tools. We are taught about data, algorithms, and encouraged to continuously stay educated about technology as a whole. The Center for Humane Technology does something similar. The nonprofit organization’s goal is to educate others on the ethics of technology, as well as using it to benefit humans rather than harm us.

Broussard’s term, technochauvinism, means the idea that technology is consistently a solution. This term relates to Rushkoff’s article, since he touches on how dependent we are on technology. We store old family photos, sentimental memories, and even credit card information on our phone. why is that? Because it’s an easy solution. Nearly everything is digitized these days. We’re even dependent on technology is ways we don’t realize. Think about how many times you see someone’s post of them happy and thriving and compare yourself. The algorithm decides to show us a reality that doesn’t exist to anyone else, but us. Both authors want and hope their readers to truly understand technology and the power behind it.

Providing new perspective on digital tools and their harm is important. You can always educate yourself on being more digital literate. Rushkoff’s ideas can help us form our own or expand on previous thoughts. With the help of new ideas, we can further learn about technology and digital tools’ control over our lives.
